Quintron Supports United Launch Alliance (ULA) On First Mission
Santa Maria, CA (January 23, 2007) – Quintron, the recognized leader in advanced interoperable voice systems and physical access control/intrusion detection systems, announced that its DICES communications system was used during the recent Delta II rocket launch providing the audio integration for command center operations. “Quintron has supported Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) since the Delta II launch in 1997,” said David Wilhite, Vice President of Quintron’s Telecommunications Systems Division. “With the newly formed United Launch Alliance, we are in a unique position as a solutions provider for both Delta and Atlas launch vehicles to support numerous upcoming critical launch operations on both coasts.”
In 2006, there were six Delta II, three Delta IV, and two Atlas V missions. The ULA has planned a total of 21 launches for 2007, consisting of a dozen Delta IIs, six Atlas Vs, and three Delta IVs, all using Quintron DICES equipment.
Quintron’s initial involvement with Delta
II began in 1997 at VAFB with the delivery of a small DICES system in support
of emergency implementation of a Remote Launch Control Center (RLCC). This was
required following an accidental explosion of a Delta II at CCAS just after
lift-off. Quintron delivered a functional system within two months that let
Boeing stay on schedule for imminent Iridium satellite launches. Following
this initial support, Quintron supplied an expanded DICES system for Delta II
for the RLCC and a second at the launch pad, along with numerous other launch
system enhancements at the pad. Quintron was also awarded a contract for
on-going launch site operations support for Delta II that has been in effect
ever since.
In 2000, Quintron was selected by both Lockheed Martin (for Atlas 5) and Boeing
(for Delta IV) to supply DICES audio switches for launch pads at CCAS.
Boeing also awarded Quintron contracts for related video systems at the Delta
IV pad at CCAS. These systems have successfully supported numerous launch
operations at CCAS for both vehicles.
In 2003, Quintron was awarded a contract to support Boeing efforts to re-build
the Space Launch Complex 6 (SLC-6) at VAFB. This SLC was originally built
for planned Space Shuttle launches in the early 1980's, and used only sparingly
since then. Quintron provided a complete DICES audio switch solution for
the launch pad and a new RLCC, along with video and other launch control
systems. Quintron's existing site operations support contract was also
extended to cover the new Delta IV launches.
In 2004, Quintron was selected by Lockheed Martin to provide expansions of
existing DICES audio switch equipment to support Atlas 5 launch operations at
VAFB SLC-3. This SLC was re-configured from prior Atlas launches for the
new vehicle. The new DICES equipment completely updated the launch pad
audio equipment and supported a reconfiguration of the existing DICES switch
equipment for a new Atlas RLCC. This system is fully supporting
preparations for the initial Atlas 5 launch from VAFB in 2007.
